Central Riyadh

Urban regeneration of a historic city

Urban Design Associates is part of a team led by Jacobs to prepare a master plan and design guidelines for the urban regeneration of Central Riyadh. Although a large and prospering city, the center of this national capital has deteriorated and is not appealing as a place to live or visit. Saudi leadership would like to transform the center into a world capital with dramatic redevelopment around several new transit stations. In advance of a form-based code, UDA prepared design guidelines that prescribe three appropriate architectural vocabularies for new buildings including the Nadj vernacular, strategies for neighborhood redevelopment, suitable block and building typologies, parking, and signage rules.
